Black people are scrutinized for everything. Especially and specifically, our bodies. I’ve thought a lot about this portrait series that I’m building and what it means to the women who are allowing me to present their bodies in public spaces. This painting of my friend Avery made me realize the power and significance of seeing yourself through the eyes of another, and for a brief moment, letting go of the way you feel you are perceived by the rest of the world - a personal experience that may otherwise be impossible.
