Zanzibar was created from a photo that I took while at a camping wedding on a hippy compound in Port Townsend, WA. The land there consisted of large grassy knolls with multiple cabins scattered around the perimeter and a communal living space in the center of it all. One of the owners named the bar cabin Zanzibar.

This painting should not be considered an ode to alcohol/drinking, but rather the good feelings that come from spending quality time and celebrating with the people you love.

I didn’t know the people who lived on the compound prior to arriving for the wedding with all of my camping gear in tow. I cherish this experience because they welcomed me with open arms anyway. They were kindhearted and offered a nurturing spirit. This painting is meant to capture the positive care-free vibe that emerged from those couple of days I spent at this hippy wedding.
